Jean PROUVE (1901-1984) et Jules LELEU (1883-1961)
Table gueridon du Sanatorium Martel de Janville Lacquered sheet metal and medium with silkscreened geometric motifs H 74 D. 125 cm (Lacquer shards visible) Bibliography: - Emmanuelle Bréon and Michelle Lefrançois, Le musée des années 30, Édition Somogy,2002, reproduced p. 111 Exposition: - Similar model exhibited at the Musée des Années 30 in Boulogne-Billancourt. Provenance: - Private collection - Paris Note: The Martel de Janville sanatorium, located on the Assy plateau in Haute Savoie, is part of a group of establishments set up at the beginning of the 20th century to treat pulmonary symptoms before the discovery of antibiotics. The Martel Sanatorium in Janville was designed to operate independently, it houses patients, staff and general services. It was open to officers and non-commissioned officers of the French army, and received a major donation from Countess Geoffroy Martel de Janville, whose name it bears. The ensemble we are presenting, an equivalent of which is presented at the Musée des Années 30 in Boulogne Billancourt, was commissioned by the French army in 1934-35 from Jean PROUVE. He had to build the entire furniture in Nancy in his workshops. The bed's longitudinal members and box springs are identical to those of the Cité universitaire de Nancy, designed by Prouvé two years earlier, in 1932, and which earned the designer a solid reputation. The buildings were built by the Nantes architects Pol ABRAHAM and Henry Jacques LE MEME. Jules LELEU was the decorator, which is why it is very likely that he was also at the origin of the furniture.
