DAVESNE (François)
Harmony of God's love and justice. To the Roy, the Royne and Messrs. of Parliament. Jouxte the printed copy in The Hague,[Paris], 1650, In-12, green morocco, frame of wheels, decorated back, inner lace, gilded edges (Binding around 1790). Very rare first edition of this singular and extravagant book by a disciple of Simon Morin, which was deleted as soon as it was published (Peignot, Dictionnaire des principaux livres condamnés au feu, p. 94): It is believed that Davesne died before Simon Morin's torture in 1662. He had been imprisoned in 1651 for libels made against the king, enacted by madness and fanaticism. Between 1649 and 1651, he had published 25 pamphlets aimed at claiming the royalty God had granted him (G. Brunet, Les Fous littéraires, pp. 47-48). Very nice copy bound by Derome the young, testimony of the enthusiasm of 18th century bibliophiles for heterodox books. The binding bears on the second counterplate the notes of the bookseller Bailly, highlighted by Éric Aguirre. From the Cécile Éluard library (ex-libris).
